Does bleach kill fleas? An infestation of those pesky fleas is just plain horrible. Can we put a bit of bleach on those insects and solve our flea problems? A flea is not only your pet’s concern but yours as well. When your dog or cat is scratching non-stop, most likely, a horde of fleas is already making their presence felt.

Bleach can help you curb flea problems because it can kill them. Bleach effectively kills flea eggs, adult fleas, and other bugs that make your hair stand when you see them flocking in large numbers. As bleach is effective in getting rid of germs, it is also effective in getting rid of fleas.

Fleas feasts on your pet’s blood. When you are not too careful, those fleas will eat even dinners on you as well. When your pet has severe flea problems, you can notice that they are inconvenient and not at ease. The worse part, if your pet swallows an adult flea, that would lead to tapeworm infection.

The fleas get to taste a bit of you when you bond with your pet. We know how itchy flea bites are, and getting you to scratch them incessantly would lead to infection. Fleas also carry with them diseases. The infamous bubonic plague in the 14th century caused so much death and grief to many people in Europe.

Getting your home, your pets, and even you infested with flea is a serious issue that needs a serious solution. A simple bleach solution can kill fleas almost right away. When you dissolve bleach in water, it forms a hypochlorous acid that penetrates the flea’s cell wall and gives it an instant sure kill.

Solving a flea problem with a bleach solution

Although using bleach is effective in getting rid of fleas in your home, it is not a “fail-safe” way. The best way to get rid of those fleas using a bleach solution is to drown them in it. It may be a solution, but it is not the ultimate solution of curbing down their numbers because you can’t practically soak your entire home in a bleach solution.

But it is a start, like they always say, “We need to start somewhere.” How do we know we are experiencing a flea problem? When you see that your pets constantly scratch their hair and it falls. But it would be best if you were sure because your pet’s hair falls could be allergies.

If you notice your pet’s beddings or rugs have traces of 1/8-inch long reddish-brown, a raisin-like creature with legs, then it’s a confirmed flea. If fleas have bitten you, you could get infected with Flea Allergy Dermatitis or FAD. It is from their saliva and can cause so much itching and scratching on your part.

Fleas hang on dark and damp areas that are far from sunlight. You can find them in the regions that get little sunlight, like underneath your carpets and in cracks and crevices. Please pay attention to places where your pet takes his nap. And you have to take note of where you, your family, and your pet usually bond. Most likely, they are there.

Follow these simple steps to getting rid of fleas using bleach.

• STEP 1 – CLEAR YOUR HOUSE WITH PETS: Get all animals and that includes your fish to the area where you are planning to use the bleach. The fumes of bleach are toxic, so you need everyone to get out of the house even for 3 hours so they won’t be inhaling those fumes. You need to make sure that your place is well-ventilated after you have sprayed your area with your bleach solution. You can open your windows, your fans to get rid of that bleach smell fast.

• STEP 2 – FULLY PROTECT YOURSELF: Please wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like a long-sleeved shirt, rubber gloves, rubber boots/shoes, goggles and respirator. It is better to be safe than to be sorry.

• STEP 3 – PREPARE YOUR BLEACH SOLUTION: Mix 1 cup of sodium hypochlorite beach with 5 gallons of water. It is a 1:10 ratio. Use this ratio until you get enough solution to knock those fleas off senseless.

• STEP 4 – USE YOU VACUUM: Vacuum your floor and make sure you vacuum that area where the carpet and rugs rests. Be sure to vacuum thoroughly and get rid of “flea dirt”, because that is what those juveniles feed on. A sweep of vacuum can help you get rid of those flea eggs.

• STEP 5 – SPRAY YOUR PLACE WITH BLEACH SOLUTION: Use a good spray bottle to spray those critters out of existence. Locate those areas where they are well-hidden because that is where most of their eggs are located. Get that sprayer to work and give it a nice swish to ensure that those pesky fleas are being taken care of.

• STEP 6 – WASH ANYTHING WITH HOT SOAPY WATER: When you finished spraying, get those infested clothing, pet beddings, and everything in hot soapy water. Add a little bleach and make it sure you dry them properly. You can repeat every few weeks if necessary until you are sure that there is no more infestation. Just make sure you are using bleach properly as it can change the color of wood floors and other furniture.

Bleach can kill fleas in an instant. The sodium hypochlorite that you dissolve in water becomes hypochlorous acid that penetrates the fleas’ cell wall and kills them. The very odorous gas it produces suffocates those bugs. When it touches your skin, it can irritate it, and a stronger concentration can cause skin burns.

It is a deadly concoction for fleas. Be sure that when you spray it, you are directly hitting those bugs because, after a while, your solution can break down to form salt and water. As soon as the bleach solution touches the fleas, it kills them in just seconds, depending on how strong the concentration is.

You need to understand that the stronger your mixture, the more effective it is and the more it can cause danger to you, so be sure to put or donned your PPE to avoid any risk of injury or inhalation of poisonous fumes. It is highly corrosive. Be sure to shield away any items at home that you will hit with your bleach spray.
